Playful optics

“He who gains a victory over other men is strong – he who gains a a victory over himself is all powerful”

Our culture is so wrapped up in the idea of success, which too often is defined as victory over the next. Bruce Lee flips that with  overcoming oneself. That leaves the question: Who or what is the enemy within you?

Handdrawn typeface

The original sketch had a perfect round ‘O’ and fat, strong letters and a slightly stunted ‘C’.

As I worked the graphics, I decided to keep it as true to the pencil strokes as possible without compromising with the guiding principles of typograph.

Circular shading

Drawing optical shading is fun and games, but always compromises around the curved letters. Why not take the curves to the straight letters instead of the other way around?

Details, details

The sentences are long. But the quote is strong. The main word has umpf – and we don’t want to compete with that. Hence, everything else is toned down: Black background, gray secondary wording.

Bruce Lee

Was a remarkable movie maker and a legendary martial artist who inspired a whole generation.

He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from different combat disciplines.

Lee is considered by some commentators and martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between East and West.
